Hakatere Conservation Park,and adjoining Mount Somers Conservation Area situated northwest of Ashburton, offer a wide range of outdoor activities, including tramping/hiking around Mt Somers walkway with historic coal workings, impressive volcanic formations and deep canyons. There is also an array of tracks around Hakatere Park including Te Araroa Trail through rolling tussucklands, lakes and sparkling clear rivers.
